Mavado Feat. Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor - Can’t Take Wi Life
School’s in Session
As the youngest son of Reggae Legend Freddie McGregor, Stephen started producing in his fathers aptly named Big Ship Studios at the age of 5 and made his first song that same year titled “School Done Rule.” The song was about staying in school and received some airplay. By 10, Stephen was playing the piano, violin, drums, bass, guitar. This would prove to be his foundation and also would be the reason he garnered the nickname “Di Genius”. He said he fell in love with the larger vision and decided he wanted to focus on production. His break came when he drove his “Cartoon”Riddim to Elephant Man’s house and he recorded “Diss Badd Man.” It instantly made “Di Genius” a Producer that most Dancehall Artists wanted to *Juggle his riddims. Now in 2009, at 19, he has more than 500 Riddims under his belt. He also records with his older brother Chino and Sister Shema.
In a recent article in the New York Times Hot 97 DJ Bobby Konders was quoted saying of McGregor, “Jamaica has a lot of great producers, but people view him as the new kid carrying the flavor; so young but with a proven track record. He took many different influences from hip-hop and reggae and made them into his own sound. Stephen’s that dude, and he’s a winner.”
And I must a agree, with blazing songs like Sean Paul’s “So Fine” & Mavado’s “In Di Car Back” you know he’s gonna be a major force in the years to come.
*Jugging Riddims is a term used to measure how many vocals an artist can get on their riddim.
